"Environment Minister Andrä Rupprechter (ÖVP) is insisting on an end to the tax privilege for diesel. Currently, a litre of petrol is subject to 48.2 cents in mineral oil tax, while diesel is taxed at 39.7 cents. "It's undeniable that the diesel privilege makes no sense from an ecological standpoint", Rupprechter told the "Tiroler Tageszeitung" and the "Vorarlberger Nachrichten"." reports Die Presse on 28 December 2016.
And further: "A working group at the Finance Ministry is thinking about how we can sensibly organise a gradual phase-out of the tax concession". The concrete measures are to be enshrined in the climate and energy strategy.
Industry association sees no positive effects
The motoring club ÖAMTC immediately responded with criticism to the repeated push by Environment Minister Rupprechter. "A tax increase on diesel only produces losers", said ÖAMTC lobbyist Bernhard Wiesinger in a statement on Tuesday. If one wanted to equalise the mineral oil tax (MöSt), "then it would be cheaper for the Finance Minister to lower the one on petrol. That way, consumers could be relieved of the burden rather than being burdened further", believes the ÖAMTC representative."
