K3 Award for Climate Communication 2022 – Apply by 12 May!


In 2021 we launched the K3 Prize for Climate Communication and were overwhelmed by the response we received. Now the prize is going into its second round and we're already looking forward to the exciting projects, initiatives and contributions from editorial teams across the German-speaking world that are particularly effective at motivating people to take action.

The application period runs from 1 April to 12 May 2022.

In which categories will the K3 Prize 2022 be awarded?

The K3 Prize for Climate Communication is awarded in three categories:

Citizens' Prize of the KLIMA ARENA (Klimastiftung für Bürger) in the category Speaking, Storytelling, Participation – for communication formats from everyday life and the workplace, municipalities, communities and neighbourhoods

1st Prize: €4,000; 2nd Prize: €1,000

Eunice Foote Prize for Climate Communication in the category Knowledge, Context, Debate – for climate communication formats from science and research

1st Prize: €4,000; 2nd Prize: €1,000

K3 Prize for Climate Journalism for journalistic or editorial projects and (implemented) concepts, reporting formats, article series, broadcast series, etc. Submissions of individual articles, reports, books or individual TV, radio or online contributions are not possible.

What criteria need to be met?

Applications must meet the following criteria:

​Content criteria are:

The project, initiative or media format

  • places a focus on climate communication, i.e. on societal dialogue about climate protection, climate policy or climate change adaptation;

  • makes an outstanding contribution to engaging and activating people on the topic of climate;

  • targets in particular people who are indifferent, distant or opposed to the subject.

​Formal criteria are:

  • in German or from the German-speaking world;

  • already in implementation or publicly visible;

  • no more than three years old at the application deadline of 12.05.2022

Who can apply?

Anyone whose projects or initiatives meet the above criteria can apply. For example, the following can apply:

  • for the Citizens' Prize of the KLIMA ARENA (Klimastiftung für Bürger): municipalities, communities, districts, schools and educational institutions, associations, citizens' initiatives, NGOs, foundations, community groups or individuals, etc.;

  • for the Eunice Foote Prize for Climate Communication: individuals and organisations of any kind whose projects involve science communication;

  • for the K3 Prize for Climate Journalism: editorial teams and media professionals. Journalistic or editorial projects and (implemented) concepts, reporting formats, article series, broadcast series, etc. are eligible for the award. Submissions of individual articles, reports, books or individual TV, radio or online contributions are not possible.

Not eligible to apply are employees and their relatives, partners, contractors and business partners of the organisations and institutions involved in the K3 Prize.

When does what happen (application deadline, selection, award ceremony)?

The application period runs from 1 April 2022 to 12 May 2022. Applicants will be informed at the beginning of July 2022 as to whether they have won.

The award ceremony will take place as part of the K3 Congress 2022 https://k3-klimakongress.org/ on 15 September 2022 in Zurich. Prize winners will be invited to attend, provided the pandemic situation allows.
