Heavy rainfall events, which are set to become more frequent in future, are causing more landslides, as a research team from the University of Graz reports. Here's what can be done about it.
Landslides occur repeatedly in Austria — last summer, for example, as a result of heavy rainfall and flooding. The situation was particularly severe in June 2009, when at least 3,000 slope failures occurred in south-east Styria, causing enormous damage. A research team from the University of Graz has now shown in a study that such large numbers of landslides could become more frequent in future and affect a larger region if global warming and its wide-ranging consequences are not kept more firmly in check.
