The decision by the Federal Administrative Court (BVwG) to prohibit the construction of the third runway at Vienna Airport is a "landmark ruling", says Erika Wagner, board member of the Institute of Environmental Law at the University of Linz.
Never before has a project been prohibited with reference to climate protection. "Honestly, environmental science has long been waiting for this step." In environmental science, people had long expected "that a ruling would finally say that climate protection should be taken seriously."
From Wagner's perspective, the ruling is "very well reasoned, legally sound and in order." How the supreme courts, which Vienna Airport intends to appeal to, will rule, however, is another matter.
