Hot days from 30 degrees Celsius and tropical nights with a minimum temperature of 20 degrees or more: the terms in classical climatology are well established. The climate crisis, however, calls for new terminology. Days on which temperatures reach 35 or even 40 degrees have no name – yet appropriate categories would be important for rapidly available statistical statements.
In the Anglo-American world, expressions borne of the climate crisis have existed for some time: in extreme heat, people talk of "triple digits" – meaning temperatures of at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which works out to roughly 37.8 degrees Celsius. Just last month, "triple digits" were very much in vogue, after weather services in the US state of Texas recorded temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit on more than 40 days in a year for the first time.
