"Misleading": Harsh verdict on climate policy

Climate researcher Gottfried Kirchengast from Graz is the only scientist on Austria's 46-member climate protection committee.


He is highly critical of politicians, noting that there is no shortage of proposals for ways out of the climate crisis. The "Steirerkrone" met him for an in-depth interview.

You are the only scientist on the climate protection committee. Doesn't that alone say a lot about the Austrian political establishment's approach to climate protection?
Science gets involved when you want to make evidence-based policy. If you prefer to go it alone, enlightened people aren't necessarily the best advisers. Austria is still very underdeveloped in this regard.

21 degrees were recorded this week in the Canadian town of Alert, the world's northernmost settlement. Record after record is being broken, yet there are still climate change sceptics. Extreme weather events like this are clearly fingerprints of climate change. More and more heat is accumulating both in the atmosphere and in the world's oceans; this isn't a matter of belief, these are the results of unequivocal measurement methods.
