The National Energy and Climate Plan (NEKP) is a plan through which all EU member states must demonstrate their path towards meeting their EU energy and climate targets. This plan must be finalised and submitted to the European Commission by June 2024.
In the National Energy and Climate Plan, Austria sets out its path to achieving its targets. A key basis of the NEKP is the so-called WAM scenario (with additional measures). This calculates, on the basis of all measures that have been adopted as well as those already planned, how large the reduction in greenhouse gases will be. From this, it is possible to determine what further measures are still required.
The WAM scenario shows that with the current measures in sectors not covered by the EU Emissions Trading System, a reduction of 35 per cent by 2030 compared to 2005 can be achieved. This means that a further 13 percentage points are still needed to meet the EU target.
As part of the plan development process, public involvement is also envisaged. The Ministry of Climate Protection is inviting all stakeholders to contribute their proposals and input – in particular regarding the achievement of targets.
