Nature and Environment Global: What's the UN biodiversity summit all about?


Two years ago, a historic species protection agreement was signed. Now countries are discussing how it can be implemented and funded to better protect human health and food supplies. 

At the UN Conference on Biological Diversity in 2022, heads of state and government set ambitious targets for protecting 30% of land and ocean areas by the end of the decade — up from 17% of land areas and just under 8% of oceans in 2022. The agreement is as groundbreaking for biodiversity as the Paris Agreement is for the climate. It also includes restoring 30% of already degraded areas. Over the next two weeks, several thousand policy makers, business leaders and representatives of non-governmental organisations will meet in the Colombian city of Cali to track progress on the agreement and address sensitive issues such as funding.
