Nature study on communication about the climate crisis

Under the title "The changing language and sentiment of conversations about climate change in Reddit posts over sixteen years", a Nature study has been published, showing how communication about the climate crisis on Reddit has changed.

The study analyses sixteen years of Reddit discussions and 11.5 billion posts regarding language use around climate change and how it evolved from 2005 to 2021. Gabriele Fariello and Darius Jemielniak applied sentiment analysis, polarisation, subjectivity, and readability metrics to discussions about "global warming" and "climate change".

The results show that the use of the term "climate change" surpassed "global warming" in 2013, with "climate change" being associated with more negative sentiment and higher subjectivity. In addition, there was a decline in climate-related discussions over time, despite an overall increase in posts. These findings suggest that public engagement with climate topics on Reddit is decreasing, and that the choice of terminology significantly influences the tone and complexity of discourse, illustrating how climate issues are communicated and perceived by the public.
