In the new CCCA Fact Sheet in the series Climate Change - Mitigation and Adaptation Patrick Trummer (Montanuniversität Leoben) and Ingeborg Schwarzl (Climate Change Centre Austria, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna) explore the topic "Circular Economy – a contribution to climate protection".
The concept of the circular economy (Circular Economy) pursues a regenerative, systematic approach in contrast to the prevailing linear economy ("throwaway economy"). It aims to minimise the use of raw materials, waste production, emissions and energy waste by closing, slowing and narrowing material and energy cycles. Since the end of 2014, important milestones have been set within the European Union (EU) on the path towards a sustainable economy. The aim of this Fact Sheet is to make the complex system of the circular economy and its opportunities and challenges more tangible, and to highlight possibilities for climate protection. To this end, the focus here is on non-renewable raw materials in the sense of mineral and fossil resources.
