New Initiative Air Traffic Vienna South Region – Noise Protection/Environmental Protection & Open Letter

The Neue Initiative Flugverkehr is a non-profit, independent, and non-partisan association whose goal is to be a voice for people who are concerned about their health and the climate, or whose quality of life is being affected — when planes fly over their heads, often every few minutes, and they feel powerless to do anything about it.

NIF, together with other associations (in particular Aviation Reset) and members, reaches out to the public, politicians, and institutions through emails, letters, and appeals to raise awareness of the issue

Unfortunately, the topic of air traffic and its consequences is kept as low-profile as possible by politicians and the media — if not outright denied or simply referred to the dialogue forum.

The dialogue forum set up and funded by Vienna Airport, which is often praised as a model project, is in reality a marketing instrument for the airport and certainly not independent. It protects the interests of the airport — members are required to sign an unconditional agreement to Vienna Airport's growth plans, including the third runway, in order to participate in the dialogue forum.

NIF is calling for the establishment of an independent body for fair and transparent citizen participation, one that brings expertise to represent citizens' interests on an equal footing with the aviation lobby. Unfortunately, there is a pronounced lack of legal recourse in this area.

NIF does not see itself as an opponent of aviation, but air traffic must be brought back to a level that is compatible with the environment.

NIF was founded to be independently available to anyone who feels affected by aviation. Because aviation too needs a transport transition. Flying is one of the least sustainable modes of transport. A carry-on-as-before approach can no longer continue here, even if some would prefer it. Too much is at stake.
