No agreement reached yet in negotiations on the EU climate target

EU member states have so far failed to reach an agreement in negotiations on the EU climate target for 2040. Negotiations continued through the night, according to a spokesperson for the European Council. The EU environment ministers are therefore meeting again this morning.

The aim of the special meeting is to reach a compromise on EU climate targets before the start of the UN climate conference in Brazil. This concerns both an interim target for the UN to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2035 and an EU interim target for 2040 on the path towards reducing emissions by 2050 to net zero compared to 1990.

The 27 member states are divided on the issue of climate protection. The debate over climate targets and CO2 prices for industry and consumers has been going on for months. At the EU summit at the end of October, heads of state and government set out broad guidelines for an agreement, which the environment ministers had hoped to flesh out on Tuesday. By the evening, however, an EU diplomat said it was "very, very difficult". orf.at
