Scientists and artists are often on the road. Conferences, meetings, guest lectures, research stays — all of this is part of the job, and these trips are often made by plane. But planes put more strain on the climate than other modes of transport. That's why Scientists for Future Austria, following the example of Scientists for Future Germany, have launched the campaign "Not Under 1000!": scientists and artists voluntarily commit to not flying for journeys under 1000 km, pledging instead to choose alternatives like the train or long-distance bus.
By signing the self-commitment, they set an example and become part of the "Not Under 1,000" community. But it's not just about the voluntary pledge. With their signature, participants also support a petition to the relevant ministries and those in positions of responsibility, calling for the "Not Under 1000" principle to become standard practice at universities and research institutions. The campaign kicks off with the current semester and runs until the end of the winter semester 22/23, after which the petition will be submitted along with all the signatures collected.
Anyone working at a scientific institution in Austria and undertaking business travel at home or abroad as part of their role is welcome to take part. Click here to sign directly!
