Climate change adaptation for urban and rural areas is one of the most important topics for the future. Leonore Gewessler, Robert Jandl, Arthur Kanonier and Harald Bergmann discuss the challenges and opportunities.
The use of land for recreational purposes, agricultural and forestry use, as well as soil sealing through the construction of buildings, roads, car parks or other public infrastructure are leading to increasingly serious problems. Soil is progressively losing its natural functions, can no longer absorb precipitation, and is being lost as a habitat for animals and plants. climate change is intensifying the consequences of this trend. So what can be done?
One important approach emerges from the government programme, which aims for a strategy towards "healthy soils and future-oriented spatial planning". However, the complex interplay between the often diverging interests of towns, regions and the federal government, along with divided responsibilities, makes a coordinated approach a challenging undertaking. We're asking the hard questions.
