S4F are drawing attention to an open letter initiated by Greenpeace, which is still looking for support from scientists until next Monday. The letter is intended to be signed exclusively by scientists, which is why we warmly encourage you to add your signature and collectively make a contribution against new oil and gas drilling.
The scientific consensus is clear: new oil and gas projects are incompatible with the 1.5 degree limit. That's why we at Greenpeace CEE are opposing OMV's plans to drill for gas in the Black Sea off Romania. From 2027, Neptun Deep is set to produce gas and turn Romania into the EU's largest gas producer. Over its 20-year lifespan, the project will, according to the environmental impact assessment, produce 276 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents.
The project would also further increase pressure on sensitive ecosystems in the Black Sea, which are already threatened by pollution, overfishing and industry. Neptun Deep also poses an acute threat to the two Natura 2000 protected areas "Cape Tuzla" (ROSCI 0273) and "Black Sea" (ROSPA 0076) through ship anchorage during construction work and potential leakages during operation.
In an open letter, supported by scientists, we want to call on OMV, Finance Minister Brunner and ÖBAG to stop OMV's plans to develop new gas reserves.
To sign: by Monday, 12 February in writing to marc.dengler@greenpeace.org
