Over 40 Graz businesses sign a historic pact for climate protection

Climate protection is something we're all responsible for. That's why everyone contributes through their own behaviour. The city of Graz has set a goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2040. This requires everyone's involvement, as only three per cent of CO2 emissions in Graz are attributable to the city administration and its associated entities, whilst around 40 per cent fall within the business and industry sector. Now, many Graz businesses, organisations and employers are sending a clear signal by signing the climate pact #bindabei.

Since the beginning of this year, the climate protection department of the City Building Directorate, the Department for Economic Development and Tourism, and the Environmental Office have been working together to bring as many business decision-makers on board as possible. Over a total of five workshops with around 80 participating companies and organisations, the Graz Climate Pact was established. At today's meeting, the first 41 of them signed it. In doing so, they represent not only their firm or company, but also serve as an important role model as employers of around 40,000 people in Graz.

The Climate Pact #bindabei for a climate-neutral Graz 2040 is intended as a serious declaration of intent, though it has no legally binding character. Nevertheless, climate neutrality by 2040 is the stated goal of the signatories. This is to be achieved, on the one hand, by minimising their climate footprint — that is, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, the aim is to increase their climate handprint, meaning motivating more people to rethink and take action through concrete measures.

Participating companies will be supported by the City of Graz through regular information sharing, networking and knowledge exchange, public relations, advice on preparing a climate balance sheet and monitoring, as well as funding formats offered by the City of Graz, depending on the needs of the signatories.
