Planned climate law: Climate expert on ZiB2: "Austria is heading for a missed target"


Climate researcher Daniel Huppmann describes the leaked draft from the climate ministry as "rather disappointing". Austria's climate targets are "ambitious, but achievable".

A leaked draft of the planned climate law has been sparking debate for days. The document published by "Der Standard" contains no binding commitments on CO₂ reduction of 55 per cent compared to 1990, as required by the EU by 2030. Instead, it reveals that the ministry under Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP) is planning a steering group to prepare for the purchase of certificates worth billions. Should Austria fail to meet the EU's climate targets, it faces heavy financial penalties. According to the government, the internal coordination process is still ongoing. The government programme, meanwhile, sets out the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2040.
