Political developments could threaten climate protection

In the worst case, around 30 per cent of the world's population could be living in politically unstable countries by 2050, where nothing is being done for climate protection.


Berlin/Vienna – Achieving the climate targets agreed in Paris also depends on the political framework conditions. But how can we forecast what "governance quality" will look like in various countries in 2050? That's precisely what an international research team led by Marina Andrijevic (Humboldt University Berlin), with the involvement of researchers in Austria — macroeconomist Jesus Crespo Cuaresma from WU Vienna and IIASA in Laxenburg — has investigated.

The study, published in the journal "Nature Sustainability", shows that in the worst case, around 30 per cent of the world's population could be living in politically unstable countries by 2050 — with devastating consequences: such failed states mean corruption, conflict and a further worsening climate crisis, as under normal circumstances nothing is done there for climate protection.
