Project LUCRETIA – Changes in Land Use Can Intensify or Mitigate Urban Heat Islands


A recently completed urban climate project by ZAMG examined the role of land use change in the development of urban heat islands. Development and surface sealing have a major influence on local heat islands.

Land use and land cover play an important role in determining local climate characteristics. Their spatial variability, particularly in urban areas, leads to pronounced microclimatic differences. In order to quantify the effects of urbanisation and thereby create a foundation for sustainable urban planning, the Zentralanstalt für Meteorologie und Geodynamik (ZAMG) analysed urban temperature changes in the LUCRETIA project using historical land use data, computer models and measurement data from private weather stations.
