With the relaunch of the Climate Protection Platform BOKU x Caritas, BOKU University and Caritas are jointly sending a strong signal for well-founded climate protection that reduces poverty, promotes social justice, and avoids CO₂ emissions.
Through the platform, businesses, organisations, and individuals can support high-quality projects in the Global South via donations ("climate protection contributions") and offset their CO2 emissions. Caritas implements the projects on the ground, whilst BOKU ensures scientific quality assurance and CO₂ accounting.
BOKU launched the world's first university-based CO₂ offsetting system back in 2010. Today, this pioneering work is being developed further in partnership with Caritas – through sustainable projects that link climate protection with poverty reduction, education, and sustainable development.
Financial support for climate protection projects in the Global South is important for global climate protection and justice. Nevertheless, reducing one's own emissions in Austria and Europe remains the top priority. Co-financing climate protection elsewhere does not exempt anyone from this responsibility.
