Climate info via reel? A project at the University of Bremen is exploring how social media shapes our view of climate change and what influence influencers have on it. "Your beer is getting more expensive — blame the climate crisis." Short, punchy, and sometimes provocative statements are what works on social media. Anyone wanting to get heard on the topic of climate protection on social media needs a hook: sharp, emotional, close to everyday life. Only then comes the actual content — and perhaps a moment of insight.
The University of Bremen is examining in a study what role social media plays in gathering information and communicating about climate change.
The project Informed by Influencers (INDI) looks at the way in which climate change-relevant knowledge is spread and consumed on social networks. The aim is to determine the proportion of social media posts on this topic and to examine user behaviour. In short, we want to answer the question of how far social media posts about climate change increase the level of awareness among viewers.
