School Strikes for Climate Change — Fridays for the Future

Together with many young people around the world, pupils in Austria are also calling for bold climate policy. The scientific community is backing the movement too.

The initiative <link https: www.fridaysforfuture.at external-link-new-window internal link in current>Fridays for Future has been gaining momentum in Austria for some time now and is being watched with sympathy by the scientific community. This international movement of pupils, students and young adults is calling for ambitious climate and environmental protection policies in line with the 1.5°C target. Every Friday, tens of thousands of pupils, students, apprentices and other (young) people take to the streets worldwide. In Austria too, protests have long been taking place in six state capitals and numerous other locations.

In several countries, scientists are already supporting young people through statements on this matter as part of the #Scientists4Future initiative. Such a statement in German is currently close to completion. For time reasons, it is now being made available for signing by researchers from all disciplines until 14 March (not 10 March as originally planned). The aim is to publish it before the global <link https: www.fridaysforfuture.at events globaler-klimastreik external-link-new-window internal link in current>climate strike on 15 March, when people in over 40 countries on every continent will be striking.
