Severe weather and extreme heat at the end of the third warmest June on record

Third warmest June on record

It's already clear that June 2021 ranks near the top of the record books: "Both in the lowlands and in the mountains, it was the third warmest June since records began in 1767," says Alexander Orlik from the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG). "In the preliminary analysis, June 2021 is 2.5 degrees above the 30-year average in the lowlands, and 2.7 degrees above in the mountains."

June 2021 thus further confirms the dramatic warming of recent years. Of the ten warmest Junes in Austria's 254-year measurement history, eight have occurred since 2000. The top 10 warmest Junes are: 2019, 2003, 2021, 2017, 1811, 2002, 1822, 2018, 2007, 2012 (ZAMG dataset Histalp lowland).

In addition, it looks set to be the second sunniest June on record and one of the ten driest.
