Snow and ice under climate stress: researchers provide first comprehensive overview of the loss of ice and snow in the Austrian Alps

Led by the University of Graz, researchers have now comprehensively documented for the first time the extent of the retreat of permafrost, snow and ice in the Austrian Alps.

The fascinating and visually striking report vividly illustrates the climate-related changes to the cryosphere in Austria. As part of the project "KryoMon.AT" (Cryosphere Monitoring Austria), funded by the Federal Ministry for climate protection, numerous institutions were involved, namely the universities of Graz, Innsbruck, Salzburg and Krems, TU Graz, the Austrian and Bavarian Academies of Sciences, GeoSphere Austria, Bluesky Wetteranalysen, GEORESEARCH, the Biological Station Neusiedl and Hydrographie Österreich.
