Unusually powerful storms, extreme rainfall with flooding and landslides, hail, lightning strikes, or heatwaves: extreme weather events are becoming more frequent. This is both a common forecast regarding climate change and the personal experience of many people, including those living in "temperate" Central Europe.
How does the isolated occurrence of such – by definition "exceptional" – weather phenomena relate to human-caused climate change? Answering this question in a scientifically rigorous way is no simple task, but increasingly complex and accurate climate models are providing ever clearer indications.
