According to a recent study, the increase in heatwaves worldwide can be clearly and unambiguously attributed to climate change. Nevertheless, the extent of the impacts is being underestimated by governments, economists, and insurers, according to a study published in the journal "Environmental Research: Climate", which involved researchers from Imperial College London and the University of Oxford, among others.
For instance, the unprecedented heatwave in Siberia two years ago would have been impossible without human-caused climate change. Heatwaves have become more frequent and more intense, and are directly responsible for tens of thousands of deaths worldwide, the researchers write. This influence has in all likelihood been significantly underestimated to date, due to major gaps in the available data.
