Study: In 500 years, the Earth could be barely recognisable due to climate change

Nearly half of the Earth's land areas could no longer be suitable for species that currently live there, according to a recent study. In some cases, endangered plants may need to be "relocated".

It takes courage to map out a scenario for the next 500 years — especially when it involves something as complex as climate change and its effects on the Earth. Yet that is precisely what an international team of researchers from ETH Zurich and other universities has attempted to do. Rather than looking only as far as 2100, as most climate change projections do, they extended their recent study to the year 2500. The reason: even if humanity manages to stop emitting greenhouse gases by the end of the century, climate change could continue to progress beyond that point.
