With the guide "The Path to Climate Neutrality", the Climate Change Centre Austria wants to help businesses become credibly climate-friendly. What do the confectionery company Katjes, the sportswear manufacturer Adidas, and the airline AUA have in common? They all falsely marketed themselves as climate-friendly companies and were found guilty of misleading consumers by the courts.
The debate around such false green promises from the business world has prompted Austria's climate research network, the Climate Change Centre Austria (CCCA), to act. In part, this is because countless companies now claim to be offsetting their own climate pollution by having other firms compensate for the CO2 they've produced. But when these offsets are scrutinised closely, they often fall far short of what they promise. In short, some companies are playing fast and loose with the buzzword "climate neutral".
Under the title "The Path to Climate Neutrality", climate researchers from the CCCA have consequently published a guide for businesses. On one hand, it's designed to walk companies through the steps they need to take to genuinely become climate neutral. At the same time, it's intended to serve as a science-based reference for auditors and judges to help them identify when companies are merely engaging in greenwashing.
