The Pasterze is still Austria's largest glacier — but it's melting away ever more rapidly due to the climate crisis. The Pasterze, Austria's largest glacier, was symbolically laid to rest on Tuesday, represented by an ice coffin "interred" at the Grossglockner. The initiative, organised by the cross-party climate protection association "Protect Our Winters" Austria, was prompted by climate change. Rising temperatures and glacial melt mean the Pasterze is at risk of losing its glacier tongue — which would mean it is no longer the country's largest glacier.
