Many false assumptions and conclusions are still doing the rounds in the debate on climate policy. The same kind of nonsense can come about in three ways: first, through gaps in knowledge or misunderstandings. Second, through deliberately distorted half-truths. Third, through ideologically motivated, unquestioned beliefs.
While deliberately distorted half-truths usually conceal personal, economic, or political interests, ideologically driven beliefs also exist independently of reason or interests. Because only gaps in knowledge and misunderstandings are relatively easy to clear up, most of these fallacies have stubbornly persisted for decades. They've become myths. Some of them crop up sooner or later in every discussion about climate change — including in this election campaign.
