The "who's who" of Austrian research

Among the 43 researchers active in Austria, only two are women: biotechnologist Angela Sessitsch from the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) and soil biologist Sophie Zechmeister-Boltenstern from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) Vienna.


41 researchers working in Austria, including two female researchers, are featured in a new study as part of the global "who's who" of science. They are among the 6,602 individuals from more than 70 countries who make up the top one per cent of the most cited scientists worldwide.

For the "Highly Cited Researchers 2021" list, the data company Clarivate, together with the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), drew on scientific papers published and cited between 2010 and 2020.

Two researchers from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg near Vienna have managed to feature as "Highly Cited Researchers" in multiple categories: Keywan Riahi is among just 23 researchers on the entire list who rank among the world's most influential researchers in three or more fields — in Riahi's case, these are earth sciences, environment and ecology, and social sciences.
