Germanwatch on the US election result: With Trump, the fossil fuel lobby will take over government affairs / Enormous challenge for international climate protection efforts / The global community now needs a clear commitment to the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.
The environmental and development organisation Germanwatch is viewing the outcome of the US elections with great concern. "Donald Trump's electoral victory has the potential to fundamentally reshape the world order that has developed since the Second World War. Germanwatch is committed to global justice, the protection of human rights, and the severely threatened ecological foundations of life. Donald Trump has announced that the global power of the USA will position itself massively against these goals in all these areas," says Christoph Bals, Political Director of Germanwatch. "With Trump, the fossil fuel lobby threatens to take over government affairs in the USA. But global economic and technological trends continue to support the dynamic development of renewable energies, storage technologies, and electric mobility."
Bals continued: "We are deeply concerned about the extent to which money from the fossil fuel lobby and the tech scene has driven this election campaign. We are now counting on an EU and Germany that demonstrate their capacity to act, both domestically and internationally, in line with their own values — together with partners, particularly in the Global South. However, given the increasing political polarisation within the EU and the questioned capacity of the German federal government to act, this will be a challenge."
