Under the motto "Powering transformative conservation", the international environmental community is currently gathering in Abu Dhabi, UAE, for the IUCN World Conservation Congress. In light of the worsening climate and biodiversity crisis and increasing global challenges, it's become clear that conventional approaches are no longer sufficient. What's needed is immediate, collaborative, transformative, and innovative action.
The more than 1,400 member organisations of IUCN – including governments, civil society actors, and organisations of indigenous peoples – are voting on key issues to shape humanity's relationship with our planet.
The congress is also the largest marketplace for science, practice, and policy in the areas of nature conservation and sustainable development. Scientists, policy experts, business leaders, and professionals from around the world are sharing their experiences, innovations, and latest research findings here.
IUCN's particular strength in bringing state and non-state actors together gives the congress the authority to significantly shape the conservation agenda for the coming decades.
At a press conference shortly, IUCN will publish the Red List of Threatened Species, in the form of a comprehensive assessment of extinction risk. It will highlight changes in the status of species as well as the underlying threats and causes. Join us to understand emerging trends and recognise the importance of science as a basis for decision-making. By drawing on the most up-to-date scientific data, the Red List helps set priorities and measure progress towards international biodiversity targets. Participants will gain valuable insights into the state of global biodiversity and the crucial role of science-based approaches for effective conservation measures.
