Universum Special: Can the World Still Be Saved?

As part of the ORF environmental initiative "MUTTER ERDE: Our Climate, Our Future – It's in Our Hands"

Under the title "Can the World Still Be Saved?", a "Universum Special" was broadcast on Wednesday, 16 September 2020, at 8:15 pm on ORF 2, to mark the ORF environmental initiative "MUTTER ERDE: Our Climate, Our Future – It's in Our Hands".

The "Universum" editorial team and the ORF regional studios examine climate change from a wide range of perspectives. International wildlife filmmakers share their impressions and observations, from Wrangel Island in the Arctic to African national parks and the Amazon. They take TV audiences to remote regions of the world where the transformation of nature under the influence of the coronavirus pandemic is becoming visible and the impacts of climate change are particularly apparent. Very concrete examples from the regional studios draw the connection to local consequences. This makes it tangible how the thawing of permafrost soils in the Arctic is linked to the drying out of Lake Neusiedl. The programme also takes a special look back at the past months of this year: what impact has the pandemic had — and is still having — on the state of the global climate?

The programme is available as video-on-demand until 22 September on tvthek.orf.at.
