Vienna is getting as hot as Skopje

Vienna could become similar to the North Macedonian city of Skopje by 2050 – at least when it comes to the climate.

Temperatures like today's Barcelona are forecast for London in the next 30 years. These are the findings of a recent study by ETH Zürich. A total of 520 major cities worldwide were examined. European cities are also heavily affected by the climate crisis.

According to these calculations, winters in Europe's cities will become 4.7 degrees warmer. On average, temperatures there would rise by 2.5 degrees throughout the year. In the Northern Hemisphere, the climatic conditions in major cities would be similar in around 30 years to those found more than a thousand kilometres further south today, according to the study published in the US science journal "PLOS One". Europe is moving closer to the equator.

According to the study, temperatures in Vienna could exceed the European average during the particularly hot months, meaning Vienna would be among the most severely affected cities. The team of scientists anticipates an increase in the average annual temperature of 2.3 degrees. However, with a rise of 7.6 degrees in the peak temperature recorded in the hottest month of the year, Vienna would be among the front-runners in Europe.
