A research team has now tested how well ChatGPT performs when it comes to information about climate change. The result: the artificial intelligence's responses are broadly quite accurate, though errors lurk in the details. Common misconceptions also cropped up in the AI's information. Nevertheless: GPT is better on climate than expected.

The online launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 has significantly changed how we understand and think about artificial intelligence. AI systems based on neural networks and so-called large language models are showing remarkable capabilities and rapid progress. The foundation of these AI models is training on large volumes of text and analysing the most probable word sequences — not a genuine understanding of content. This is one of the reasons why ChatGPT and similar tools repeatedly produce so-called hallucinations — statements that sound plausible but are completely wrong and fabricated.
