"What works against climate change myths" — column by Ingrid Brodnig


We're in danger of failing to tackle the greatest challenge of our time — the climate crisis — not least because misinformation is dumbing down the debate around it.

It's high time we spoke plainly: as humanity, we have a problem. Human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are heating the climate at such a rapid pace that we risk making large parts of the planet uninhabitable. Research paints a very clear and alarming picture here, but part of the problem is that this picture is often not taken seriously enough — or is played down through misinformation (online and offline alike). You may be familiar with this figure: 97 per cent of climate researchers conclude that human-caused climate change is taking place.

In Austria, too, we can see that misinformation and misleading claims about the climate crisis are falling on fertile ground. A new Austrian study sheds light on this...
