"Who does the climate belong to?" was the question that the Denkzeitraum project explored from April to December 2016. The project run by the Department of Practical Philosophy in cooperation with the City of Graz has been inviting people in public spaces to reflect on various topics for seven years now. Last year, the focus was on raising awareness of how environmental changes are already affecting people and everyday life. The documentation volume "Wem gehört das Klima?" recently published by Graz University Press, edited by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Lukas Meyer and Dr. Barbara Reiter, presents the activities and outcomes of the process.
Central questions included: How do we construct climate and the environment through language? Who is responsible for climate change and its consequences? What solutions are conceivable for escaping the dangers of climate change? And because impacts such as droughts, storms, and floods are forcing more and more people to flee their homes, the question of how we treat those who come to us and depend on our help was also an important theme.
Alongside academic engagement, the researchers once again sought dialogue with the general public, including at workshop discussions held at the event venue "Glockenspiel" on the square of the same name in the old town.
In addition, early-career researchers from the doctoral programme "Climate Change" – funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF – created the exhibition "KliMacht|CliMatters" at UniGraz@Museum, illuminating the global challenges from a range of perspectives.
The recently published volume "Wem gehört das Klima?" documents this exhibition as well as the expert and workshop discussions. The publication also includes the cookbook "Rezepte aus der Einkehr. So schmeckt Heimat", which was created as part of storytelling café sessions at the refugee accommodation "Einkehr" in Mariatrost.
