oekostrom AG board member Hildegard Aichberger in conversation with one of the founders of the Climate Journalism Network, Katharina Kropshofer.
Why does the climate need its own journalism?
It's a funny question, because this debate is actually still going on within journalism itself. There are people who say: "Why do we need something separate? It's a topic that comes up everywhere anyway." But what's great and exciting about it is its many layers. That's what good climate journalism means to me. Not just seeing it as one single topic, and not just reporting when a new storm happens etc., but viewing the climate crisis as a dimension in its own right.
Ö3 publishes a youth study every year in which 16- to 25-year-olds are interviewed. 80% say the topic is important to them and that far too little is being done. At the same time, they say they feel insufficiently informed about it by the media. What could be behind that? What are the media getting wrong?
