Apply to be a UNFCCC Youth Delegate and travel with the Austrian Government Delegation to COP27 in Sharm el Sheikh (Egypt) in November 2022, and COP28 in November 2023. We're looking for two youth delegates between 18 and 26 years old — the programme runs for two years (!) and is fully funded by the BMK. A solid background in climate protection and/or climate policy is great, but not strictly necessary.
The UN Climate Conference, known in English as the UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COP), is taking place for the 27th time this year. It will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, from 7 to 18 November 2022. At COP26 in Glasgow, the Paris rulebook was finalised. All articles promised under the Paris Agreement have now been "ticked off". At COP27, many countries will (hopefully) raise their climate targets and there will be negotiations on important issues such as Loss & Damage.
The Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) sends young people to the COP every year to amplify the voice of the youngest generation on the ground. This year, we're once again looking for two responsible young people to travel to COP as youth delegates. The Junior/Senior programme is being run in this format for the fourth time: as a team of four, you'll travel to the climate conference in Sharm El-Sheikh. You'll be supported by the two Senior Youth Delegates (Isabella Pfoser and Michael Spiekermann). At the following COP28 in Saudi Arabia (autumn 2023), you'll take on the role of Seniors and become mentors to the new Junior Delegates.
At the World Climate Conference, you'll follow the climate negotiations between UN member states live. You'll communicate insights from the COP as well as the demands of our generation to people in Austria through press releases, press interviews and social media. At the same time, you'll do your best at the COP to ensure that young people's calls for ambitious climate policy are taken into account in the negotiations. Among other things, there's the opportunity to work in international working groups to develop catalogues of demands, which are then handed over to decision-makers with appropriate media coverage.
At the time of applying, you don't need in-depth knowledge of the UN negotiation process — part of the Youth Delegate Programme involves building up this knowledge through workshops and with support. You'll also take part in LCOY Austria (Local Conference of Youth Austria), engage with young people from Austria, help organise climate policy events, and get to know the Austrian delegation.
The Austrian Youth Delegate Programme is fully funded by the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection (BMK).
New application deadline: Sunday, 13 March 2022!
The aim of the Youth Delegate Programme is to represent the voice of young people at the global UN Climate Conference.
