ZAMG expert on severe weather: "You almost had to rub your eyes"

ZAMG expert Georg Pistotnik speaks of the "worst thunderstorm event in Europe in decades"

Georg Pistotnik, climate researcher at the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) and, by his own account, a "passionate thunderstorm researcher", was out in the Weinviertel on Thursday evening. "I didn't see the tornado itself, but I did see the most intense thunderstorms." He's unlikely to have ever experienced weather conditions of that magnitude: "It was extreme. Without exaggerating, you could say it was the worst thunderstorm event in Europe in decades," Pistotnik told APA.

The severe weather wasn't entirely unexpected for the experts, however: "When you looked at the weather charts, you almost couldn't believe it. You had to rub your eyes." One of the thunderstorms triggered an unusually persistent and, by European standards, particularly intense tornado in the Czech Republic near the border.
