Anton Neureiter from the ZAMG climate research department was a guest on Café Puls, the breakfast television show on Puls4, on 19 August.
The glaciologist explains: "Greenland has an ice volume of roughly just under 3 million km3. However, it is being observed worldwide that melting is outpacing mass gain. Initially, glacial melting had natural causes, such as volcanic eruptions or temperature increases. Since 1950, however, a clear human influence can be demonstrated. One of the consequences of glacial melting is the rise in sea levels. For major cities such as Hamburg, London, or New York City, significant financial expenditure will be necessary to make them resilient against flooding and storms."
