CCCA staff member Lisa Waldschütz is at COP29 in Baku and is sharing her impressions with us!
The negotiations are tough – we're still not on common ground. This is concerning because science clearly shows us the state of our climate, our nature and our future. But it also offers clear measures and pathways to still achieve the 1.5-degree target. The UNEP Emissions Gap Report 2024, for example, highlights the opportunities of renewable energy. Its share can grow considerably faster than was assumed five years ago. However, this needs to be anchored in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The NDCs also need to be made more transparent to rule out "creative" accounting. Even the EU representatives emphasised at a press conference that this is a purely political problem, as everything is already technically feasible.
💭 Despite some rather baffling statements in the plenary ("oil is a gift from God"), I'm not leaving Baku without hope. This week I got to attend many fascinating talks and meet some truly inspiring people.
INBOA - International Network of Boundary Organizations on Adaptation hosted two events in the second week to which I was invited. The Climate Change Centre Austria (CCCA) is a member of the INBOA network, and I had the chance to meet motivated researchers and learn about their work, as well as the challenges they face at the interface between knowledge and action. I also got to hear some fascinating and inspiring speeches in the plenary from other observer organisations.
🗣 The demands of civil society and the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) are loud and clear. One can only hope that the nearly 200 negotiating countries will agree on a common basis by the end of the week that offers fair (!) financing, particularly for the LDCs.
