49 scientists from climate and transformation research have authored this extensive statement during the commenting phase (05.07–30.08.2023) on the current draft of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan for Austria, period 2021–2030 (NEKP). Due to the limited commenting phase of eight weeks, not all details can be covered comprehensively. Nevertheless, some key areas that require particular attention are highlighted here. Across just over 40 pages, in addition to various cross-cutting topics (e.g. digitalisation, construction and spatial planning, international fairness), the focus is primarily on the plans contained in the NEKP draft regarding energy, buildings, transport, agriculture & forestry and land use change, waste and circular economy, as well as research, innovation, education and competitiveness — with concrete measures also being proposed.
