Kick-off in Innsbruck: around 80 researchers from across Austria came together on 6 and 7 July 2022 for a first major working meeting focused on the preparation of the 2nd assessment report on climate change in Austria.

Aims & Contents

The AAR2 is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary assessment report on climate change in Austria. The aim of the AAR2 is to synthesise the scientific literature on climate change in Austria and its impacts, and to highlight mitigation potentials, climate change adaptation options, and transformation pathways. The report is being written by more than 150 scientists following the methods and processes of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and is relevant to the implementation of SDG 13
The AAR2 is a report of the Austrian Panel on Climate Change (APCC).

The report language is English, with additional German versions of the Summary for Policymakers, Technical Summary, and the Executive Summaries of the individual chapters.

The AAR2 Co-Chairs Daniel Huppmann (IIASA), Margreth Keiler (UIBK), Keywan Riahi (IIASA), Harald Rieder (BOKU) are coordinating the extensive production process of the AAR2 and are working together with more than 120 scientists over the coming three years on the new, comprehensive climate report for Austria.

Scientific Review

The scientific review process followed a rigorous, multi-stage approach based on IPCC guidelines to ensure the APCC quality standards for this assessment report. This publicly accessible process, implemented in collaboration with CCCA, encouraged broad participation from the research community and involved more than 110 external reviewers. This ensured that the assessment report presents the scientific literature in a comprehensive, clear, and consistent manner.

The entire review process was accompanied by a total of 16 international experts serving as Review Editors, who ensured that all review comments were addressed by the authors. They verified that comments were responded to and that texts were revised and supplemented accordingly. They supported authors in handling contentious comments and were in contact with the respective chapters from the First Order Draft stage onwards.

Stakeholder Process

The AAR2 is intended to be a valuable resource for a broad range of societal actors. To ensure its relevance, stakeholders from policy, public administration, business, interest groups, and civil society were involved at key stages of the report's preparation.

The process took place on several levels: a strategic Steering Board accompanied the work, thematic roundtables brought authors and stakeholders together to discuss specific topics, and a co-creation workshop in January 2024 gave stakeholders the opportunity to discuss parts of the draft jointly with authors.

Following the publication of the report, a co-evaluation workshop will take place in June 2025 to support decision-makers and stakeholders in translating the report's findings into action across various sectors.

Maria Holzinger and Daniel Huppmann are happy to answer any questions about the stakeholder process.
