6th IPCC Assessment Report (WG II & III): Press Conferences (February & April 2022)

"Mitigation of Climate Change" (WG III)

The report will assess progress in limiting emissions and the range of available mitigation options in energy systems and cities, as well as in sectors such as agriculture and forestry, land use, buildings, transport and industry. It will examine these in the context of sustainable development. It will also assess the relationship between actions in the near and medium term and long-term emissions pathways for limiting global warming.

On 4 April 2022, the press conference on the topic of "Mitigation of Climate Change" by Working Group 3 of the 6th assessment report took place online.

At this event, media representatives also had the opportunity to engage in direct dialogue with the authors.

Welcome by: Gerhard Wotawa, Chair of Climate Change Centre Austria (CCCA)

Brief overview and contextualisation of the report by:

  • Keywan Riahi, IPCC Coordinating Lead Author – "Chapter 3: Mitigation pathways compatible with long-term goals" / IIASA Program Director Energy Climate and Environment (ECE)
  • Silvie Kreibiehl, IPCC Coordinating Lead Author – "Chapter 15: Investment and Finance" / Frankfurt School - UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate and Sustainable Energy Finance
  • Volker Krey, IPCC Lead Author – "Chapter 4: Mitigation and development pathways in the near-to mid-term"/IIASA Research Group Leader Integrated Assessment and Climate Change (IACC)

The press conference is organised by Climate Change Centre Austria (CCCA) with the support of IIASA and Scientists for Future Austria (S4F AT).

"Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability" (WG II)

On 28 February 2022, CCCA-Climate Change Centre Austria invited journalists and other Austrian stakeholders to an exchange on the occasion of the publication of Part 2 of the 6th IPCC assessment report on "Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability". The assessment report summarises the current state of knowledge on the ecological and societal impacts of a warming world.

Welcome by: Univ.Prof. Dr. Harald Rieder, Board Member of Climate Change Centre Austria

IPCC discussants were:

  • Assoz.-Prof. Dr. Birgit Bednar-Friedl, IPCC Coordinating Lead Author – "Chapter 13: Europe", University of Graz
  • Univ.Prof. i.R. Dr. Georg Kaser, IPCC Review Editor – "Chapter 13: Europe" and "Cross Chapter Paper: Mountains", University of Innsbruck
  • Dr. Reinhard Mechler, IPCC Lead Author – "Chapter 17: Decision-making options for managing risk", International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA)

Following the scientific perspective, BMK Section Head Jürgen Schneider (VI "Climate and Energy") spoke as a guest on the political dimension, representing Federal Minister Gewessler.

Background
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – also known as the World Climate Council – is an institution of the United Nations. It was founded in 1988 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). On its behalf, experts from around the world regularly compile and evaluate the current state of knowledge on climate change from a scientific perspective. The IPCC provides a basis for science-based policy decisions by identifying different courses of action and their implications, without, however, proposing specific solutions or making policy recommendations.
