Research and science can help to shape societal debate in a forward-looking way, to derive decision-making questions for society from the breadth of available knowledge, and to develop and analyse future scenarios with their associated risks and opportunities. In light of a global society in dynamic transition, the role of science as a visionary and thought leader in research policy should therefore be reinvigorated.
The Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) has therefore been running the Workshop Series "2048" in cooperation with various research institutions since 2006. The stated aim is to define and explore future research policy priorities in the field of sustainability research. Between 30 and 40 internationally renowned representatives from academia, education, policy, research administration and industry are invited to these events.
