Climate Education for Schools - Outreach Project

Climate change is a challenging task for our generation. The profound and multidimensional consequences that await us will change lives all around the world.
By now, these consequences and effects have been researched across multiple disciplines and scientifically confirmed. At the same time, the dangers of climate change are a hotly debated topic and are very much on the minds of pupils who will be affected by them in the future. However, knowledge about climate change, its physical connections and its humanitarian as well as economic effects often doesn't get enough space in the curriculum. Yet knowledge about the effects of our actions is the foundation for a societal transformation.

That's why students and graduates have set themselves the goal of closing this knowledge gap and strengthening the scientific and social science understanding of the climate system and climate policy, as well as awareness of our planet and our future.

With the support of professors from a wide range of disciplines, students give talks and run workshops at schools for lower and upper secondary pupils across all school types. The scientifically sound talks are developed in cooperation with Scientists For Future and the University of Graz, and are always delivered by two students together.

Who is it aimed at?

The project is aimed at classes in all secondary schools. Talks are then tailored to the relevant age group and existing level of knowledge.

What do the pupils learn?

In units of at least a double period, pupils are introduced to the topic of climate change through interactive talks, games, quizzes and discussion. The scientific fundamentals are explained, and the resulting meaningful actions and demands at both a political and personal level are discussed. Pupils should leave the session feeling motivated and ready to engage critically with this pressing topic.
