CCCA Updates

Invitation reminder: 1.5 °C global warming – Future Dialogue Austria

Following the separate mailing two weeks ago, we'd like to remind you once more about the event taking place on the occasion of the publication of the Special Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on limiting global warming to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels and its consequences. CCCA, together with BMNT and BMBWF, invites you to a dialogue with authors of the report, renowned climate researchers and representatives from public administration, politics, business and the general public.

In the first part of the event, the report will be presented by leading authors, with a direct focus on the consequences and perspectives for Austria.

Afterwards, we warmly invite you to contribute your expertise to the following thematic groups:

  1. Energy & Industry: Accelerating the transition towards a carbon-free industry and carbon-free energy systems
  2. Mobility and Buildings: Sustainable innovations in technology and lifestyle
  3. Cities: Sustainable and resilient urban systems
  4. Land & Ecosystems: Managing competing interests sustainably
  5. Finance: Partnerships and mechanisms for mobilising sustainable investment
  6. Education and Empowerment: Supporting individual responsibility and sustainable consumer choices
  7. Economics & the Future: Innovative approaches to a low-emission economic system

The aim is to jointly identify, in a consensus-oriented dialogue format, what is already happening in Austria, where further action is needed, and what constructive ideas can be contributed to the international Talanoa Dialogue to help achieve the 1.5° target. The goal is to submit the output of the event to the website set up by the UNFCCC Secretariat as input to question three "How do we get there?". Details on the questions and submissions can be found at www.talanoadialogue.com.

Attached you'll find the <link fileadmin>invitation and programme.
Registration for the event is possible here until 15 October 2018.

We look forward to seeing you!

Invitation & Programme

Conference "Wissenschaft im Wandel", 13 November, Vienna

On 13 November 2018, the Allianz Nachhaltige Universitäten will be hosting the conference "Wissenschaft im Wandel" in the run-up to the international conference "Wachstum im Wandel / Growth in Transition".

The European Union and Austria have committed, under the Paris Climate Agreement, to reducing CO2 and thus to comprehensive measures in the area of sustainability. Equally, EU countries, as UN member states, must fulfil their obligation to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Challenges at the level of universities and higher education institutions The conference "Wissenschaft im Wandel" addresses these challenges at the level of higher education institutions and universities.

These institutions, as centres of education and research, can provide the necessary impetus for societal change and thereby play a decisive role in implementing the global development goals. But to do so, a paradigm shift must also take place within higher education institutions themselves. After all, the problems cannot be solved solely with the ways of thinking and the knowledge of the generations that caused them. Key questions for the future What should research and teaching look like in the future? What does the transformation of these core areas mean in concrete terms? What determines success and failure? What are the driving forces behind this, and what role do the SDGs and the Paris Climate Agreement play as a global political framework?

How do transformation knowledge and research, as well as transformative teaching, learning and researching, interact with one another? Which existing approaches and strategies support the transformation of universities and higher education institutions? The conference "Wissenschaft im Wandel" approaches these questions both from a systems-theoretical and epistemological perspective, and through a practical approach based on the SDGs. A total of four sessions will thus shed light on different angles relating to the areas of teaching and research.

The keynote will be delivered by Arjen Wals, Professor of Transformative Learning for Socio-Ecological Sustainability, on the topic of "Leaving the Titanic: Can higher education and the SDGs help humanity overcome global system dysfunction?". As good practice examples from Austrian universities and higher education institutions, the winners of the Sustainability Award will present their projects in a poster session and be available to answer questions. In a closing joint discussion, experts from universities and higher education institutions, public administration, and the funding landscape will summarise and discuss the key impulses and results from the sessions.

The conference results will be presented and discussed in a dedicated session at the "Wachstum im Wandel" conference, taking place from 14 to 15 November 2018.

No conference fee, limited number of participants.

Copernicus Information and Training Event, 14 November, Vienna

On 14 November, a full-day Copernicus information and training event will take place at the Urania in Vienna. The European Earth observation programme Copernicus (www.copernicus.eu) creates a modern and high-performance space infrastructure for remote sensing and geoinformation services.

In addition to data from the Copernicus satellites (the Sentinels), the Copernicus services provide information products on six thematic areas free of charge (monitoring of land surfaces, oceans, atmosphere and climate change, as well as disaster/crisis management and security). These data and information can also be further processed for a wide range of applications.

The aim of the event is to provide information on the Copernicus portfolio covering the topics of land surfaces, atmosphere and climate change, and to showcase concrete application examples (e.g. documentation of biodiversity, monitoring of air quality, potential of renewable energies). In addition, data management (e.g. access, processing, storage...) will be covered in detail. Alongside presentations in German and English, practical demonstrations are also planned.

This event is aimed at anyone with an interest in Copernicus, particularly representatives of public administration at federal, state and municipal level, as well as businesses and researchers. It is being organised and delivered by the European Commission with the support of the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).

The programme is now available online and registration is possible at any time!
