EU side event at COP24: Mountain regions moving towards carbon neutrality

In addition to our CCCA events in the EU and Austria Pavilions (you can find the programme overview here: https://www.ccca.ac.at/de/dialogformate/cop24/), we'd also like to draw your attention to another side event in the EU Pavilion: 07.12.2018 (Room Brussels, 10.30–12.00)

Mountain regions moving towards carbon neutrality

This side-event is being organised by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism - Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Presidency of the Alpine Convention and co-organised by the Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention.

Speaker: HOJESKY Helmut (tbc) (Austrian Federal Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism - Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Presidency of the Alpine Convention); NANCHEN Eric (Foundation for sustainable development in mountain regions); GIPPNER Olivia (DG CLIMA of the European Commission).

You can find the invitation to this event here.

Follow-up report on the CCCA Workshop at the Local Conference of Youth Austria

On 26 November 2018, the Climate Change Centre Austria, together with renowned climate researchers, organised a workshop on the IPCC Special Report on the 1.5°C target at the first Local Conference of Youth Austria at TU Wien.

The aim was to convey the key findings of the report to the young participants and, in an interactive setting, to work out together what is needed and how individuals can become actively involved in achieving the goal of the Paris Climate Agreement.

You can find the follow-up report and photos from the workshop here.

1st annual workshop for CCCA early-career researchers: Participatory approaches in climate and sustainability research

On 19 November, the CCCA Early Career Working Group invited 15 young scientists from several Austrian universities to BOKU to discuss their current and future research projects — with a focus on participatory methods — with other early-career researchers and an internationally leading expert in this field.

The active involvement of stakeholder groups is increasingly becoming an integral part of applied climate and sustainability research. In particular, the inter- and transdisciplinary nature of these research strands requires the development and implementation of effective stakeholder engagement in deliberative processes that take into account the different value systems and rationalities of the actor groups involved, in order to jointly develop and evaluate policy options.

The first annual workshop for young CCCA researchers, which was initiated as a follow-up to the CCCA Early Career meeting at the Klimatag 2018, reflected these developments from the perspective of young researchers. Participants shared their own experiences, best-practice examples and challenges in developing and applying participatory methods. Together with Anna Scolobig from ETH Zurich, an experienced researcher in the development and application of participatory processes for disaster risk reduction, these aspects were discussed further and some concrete ideas for future collaborative research projects were developed.

The next meeting of the CCCA Early Career Working Group will take place at the 20th Austrian Klimatag on 24 April 2019 at the Vienna University of Technology. We kindly ask you to pass this information on to interested early-career researchers and welcome suggestions for topics for this event!

Climate Change Maps for Austria's Regions

To effectively address the impacts of climate change, small-scale, sector-specific information is needed — information that is above all usable by decision-makers at district and municipal level. In the ACRP project CLIMAMAP, a consortium comprising the Umweltbundesamt, EURAC and BOKU, under the project leadership of alpS GmbH, worked with broad stakeholder involvement to find a solution to this challenge of adapting to the expected rise in temperatures. Maps were developed that illustrate climate changes in the form of indicators such as hot days, tropical nights, or the length of the growing season. Particular attention was paid to the legibility and usability of the maps: in a multi-stage development process, the design and content were tested and refined with users and communications experts.

The result is a set of three maps covering eleven different climate indicators, produced for each Austrian federal state. These show the expected changes up to the end of the 21st century compared to the current situation, as well as trends throughout the 21st century under various emissions scenarios — also highlighting the effectiveness of climate protection. The representation of uncertainties arising from the use of numerous different climate models rounds off the three-map set.

The maps are therefore suitable as a decision-making tool and as awareness-raising material, and are already being used as such in practice. Numerous activities have already taken place since the end of the project, including community workshops in Tyrol and Salzburg, advisory support for map users, and work with regional administrations wishing to integrate the project results into their GIS systems. These practical applications demonstrate the potential of maps co-developed with users for communicating climate impacts at the local level.

K3 – Second Congress on Climate Change Communication

The K3 Congress on Climate Change, Communication and Society is back for its second round, taking place from 24 TO 25 SEPTEMBER 2019 in Germany. The local host is the renowned Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

The backdrop to the congress is a persistent discrepancy: climate change is one of the greatest threats facing humanity — yet people often seem only marginally interested in it. Researchers are generating ever more knowledge about climate change and promising counter-strategies — but politics and society are moving far less than would be necessary. How global warming and efforts to limit it can be brought more firmly into public focus, and what new approaches to climate communication might look like — these are the questions at the heart of the two-day congress.

All the information about the K3 Congress and the option to sign up for our newsletter can be found on our WEBSITE. Feel free to follow us on TWITTER as well.

The K3 Congress is organised by a consortium of organisers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland: the Climate Change Centre Austria (CCCA), the German Climate Consortium (DKK), the Swiss National Centre for Climate Services (NCCS), ProClim at the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT), and the non-profit science portal klimafakten.de.

An advisory board of renowned representatives from academia and practice is advising the organisers on shaping the conference programme.

We're glad you're interested in the K3 Congress and will keep you up to date on the key dates and highlights.
